  • Featured Corvairs of 2012
November 2010. I spotted an ad for a 1966 Monza  PG on craigslist and decided to look into it. It wasn't so much the advertized price as it was that it had A/C and it was a coupe. It was located in Tajique, N.M.

The car had been a daily driver until around 2007 or 08 and was not running when parked. There's a lot more to this story that I found out later . But the important things were that is was a low production number car  , the body was straight and rust free and the price was acceptable for a project car.  Still within budget .

This 1966 Monza coupe was purchased new in Albuquerque so that was a plus and it's not that cars won't rust here . They will . But this copy was rust free. It had so much rural clay dirt up underneath, I think it almost acted as undercoating.

Got it home and it's been sitting for a while . Restoration is about to begin. The 110 engine is out and parts are starting to arrive.

Out of 103,743 1966 Corvairs of all models , 37,605 were coupes. 4,780 total cars were built with factory air . That's 4.61% of all Corvairs produced that year . Over half  59, 369 or 57.23 % came equipted with PowerGlide automatic 2 speed transmissions.  By the way, the PG 's were aircooled.
So that number isn't so rare but taken as a whole , there aren't too many of these  equipted like this  still around. It also has soft ray tinted glass all around.
